Brauer-designed trio sweep top three spots in Kansas
Three acclaimed golf courses designed by GolfScapes, Inc. and its principal architect Jeffrey D. Brauer head the most recent Golfweek magazine listing of Best Courses in Kansas.
Firekeeper GC in Mayetta (designed with Notah Begay) is the top-ranked course in the Sunflower State, followed by Colbert Hills GC in Manhattan (a Brauer-Jim Colbert collaboration) and Sand Creek Station GC in Newton.
Firekeeper, opened for play in 2011 and located about 15 miles north of Topeka, is a partly wooded and partly open course that melds seamlessly into its environment, thus keeping with Potawatomi Nation’s tribal traditions of minimal disturbance. Standout holes include the boldly bunkered par-5 4th and the par-4 18th, which features two fairways. The course was listed as one of the nation’s Best New Courses of 2011 by Golf magazine, Golf Digest magazine and Golfweek, and earned mention as one of America’s top Casino courses by Golfweek.
Colbert Hills GC is 18 holes of links-style golf laid out through the Kansas Flint Hills. The track brings into play 91 white-sand bunkers, two ponds and numerous creeks and tall native grass outlines the fairways. Two of its signature holes include the par-3 fifth that has a wildcat paw bunker with purple sand to symbolize the courses affiliation with Kansas State University, and the par-5 seventh, which from the back tee has a drop of more than 90 feet to the fairway. It has been ranked as the top course in Kansas numerous times and as one of the top collegiate courses in the nation by Golfweek.
Sand Creek Station GC is a links-style 18-hole public course with unique features, including an active railway running through the course, Sand Creek bordering four holes and 11 custom ponds. The course plays on the town’s railroad history as a wooden cart bridge spans the creek and a concrete underpass allows carts under the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks. One of the course’s signature holes, “The Beast,” measures 648 yards from the championship tees and is the longest par-5 in the state of Kansas. The track has previously been named as one of the best municipal golf courses in the U.S. by Golfweek.
Golfweek’s latest list was released in the spring of 2012 and the number of courses listed per state varies based on course supply, population and level of play. The ranking includes daily-fee layouts and courses accessible via resorts.
